TILDEN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Officials say storms that tore through eastern Pennsylvania ripped the roof off an elementary school and severely damaged the building.
Strong winds and heavy rains hit the Blue Mountain Adventist Elementary School in Tilden Township, outside of Hamburg, just before 7 p.m. Thursday. The storm turned the roof into a pile of twisted metal and destroyed part of the building.
Officials say 52-year-old principal Rachel Wardecke was the only person in the school at the time. She wasn't injured.
Wardecke tells the Reading Eagle that the storm quickly tore a hole in the roof and covered her with ceiling tile, forcing her to crawl from the building. She says the school will open again.
The storm also knocked down trees and wires and left many without power.
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey, will be sending a team to conduct a storm survey in the area.
A collection of some beautiful, strange, interesting, and fascinating pictures of weather, environment and space that might let you wonder.
